Phatloss Weightloss Contest

I've decided to enter a weightloss contest being hosted by a YouTube friend joshuad1000. The contest start date was June 1 and goes for 90 days. I'm actually a little excited.

I'm starting the contest at 295.5 lbs. Ugh! But I can't complain because this time last year, I was around 380. Doing much better there. Each week he is going to put up a theme and possibly a challenge. This week's theme is "Get Up". In other words, if I find myself being lazy sitting around - get up and do something. I'm doing better at moving more. I sit the most at work, but that's because it's the type of job I have.

In addition to that contest, my employer is doing a 6 week long walking challenge that I am a part of. I'm actually a captain to a team of 9. This week's goal is to get 4000 steps per day in. It doesn't have to be just walking either. There's an activity equivalent sheet to 'convert' your activity minutes into steps. Pretty cool. Each week, the goal increases. So far, I'm doing pretty well.

Today, I'm really tired. I'm also getting blood work done this afternoon so I'm doing a 12 hour fast. Kinda stinks because I'm thinking a little food would help give me some energy. I have to wait until after 4 though.

Well...gotta go for now. Take care and enjoy the day!

5 Months Post Op

Hi there!
I'm now 5.5 months post op already. Time flies. I'm still hovering just below 300. I really need to start exercising more, but I'm having a very difficult time getting going. I don't know why, ok well maybe its because I've never liked exercise. Nothing has changed that. I just need to get moving and form a habit. My wedding anniversary was Monday and my husband and I bought each other bicycles this year. I'm pretty excited about that. Now I just need to get out there and ride! Of course, first I need to get a helmet before I go on any roads!

I'm still losing hair and I don't like it. I've added Biotin to my vitamin regimen, mainly because I've read that others have had luck with it. We'll see. The hair on top and sides is so thin that there isn't enough to even do anything. So, I just wear a headband and deal with it. I'll be glad when regrowth occurs.

Aside from having difficulty getting the exercise going and hair loss, everything else is going fine. I have noticed that I can eat a little more now. More normal portions even. I still eat quite slow though. My weight loss total from 2 weeks before surgery is about 83 lbs. I guess that's pretty good...considering the lack of a real exercise regimen. But from my highest weight ever recorded, I'm down 106 lbs. That's pretty awesome. Of course, I could use to lose another 130 lbs or so. My doctor never mentioned a goal weight for me, but I'd like to see about 165. Seems so far off yet. I just celebrated my 39th birthday (or 29 as I like to look at it because 40 is the new 30 you know!). So, I really would like to see that goal by my 40th birthday. That'd be awesome. I think it's quite possible. I've seen and read about those who've lost over 100 lbs in less than a year even.

I just need to get my butt in gear and exercise!!

4 Months Post Op

Hi there and Happy Friday!

I'm actually 4 months and 1 week post op now. Time flies doesn't it. I wanted to share my exercise success yesterday. I took a break at work and decided to go for a walk. I just walked down the street, not really paying attention to how far I was going. I chose to turn around at a few business down the road. I calculated the distance when I got back and guess what. It was nearly a mile!! I walked that distance and didn't get winded and didn't feel like I was going to keel over and die or anything. I did well with it. I felt pretty darn proud of myself too! Then, last night I decided to finally try out the Wii Fit. Now that I'm under 300, I can safely use the board without worry of breaking it. So I did 20 minutes of the Wii Fit activities. My family got a kick out of watching me to the Hula Hoop. It was fun and you know what - I can do it!! So that's what counts to me.

Surgery didn't help me to enjoy exercise. I still need to work at that. Getting into a habit is going to be tough for me. I'm pretty sore from yesterday, but I'll keep at it because I did not get this surgery for nothing. I will succeed. The surgery is my tool and it's up to me to use it.

I'm ecstatic to be under 300. My next goal is to get to 275 and I'll certainly be happy to be there. The thought of getting under 200 doesn't seem real or possible. But I should be able to do it and let me tell you, I'll be feeling amazing at that point. Under 200 - wow. I'll probably feel like I conquered the world - ha ha

All in all things are going well.

Take care!

3.5 Months Post Op

Wow - I can't believe the last time I posted anything was November. Oh well. I can't tell you when the next time I post anything will be. I get busy with work and when I come home, I'm not so eager to get on the computer. The last few days have been really nice around here.

I had surgery on December 15, 2009. The surgery I chose was the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG). Basically, a good portion of my stomach (80%+/-) was removed and now I'm left with a banana (or sleeve) shaped stomach. I'm glad I chose this particular surgery because it didn't involve any cutting or re-routing of the intestines like the other surgical options. I didn't have to worry about dumping syndrome or terrible malabsorption either. So, for me, it was a good choice. I really didn't want to do surgery at all quite honestly, but I finally had a heart to heart with myself and admitted that I needed the help. The surgery is my tool that helps me. The day of surgery, I weighed 376. Right now, according to my scale I weigh 304. I'm down 72 lbs since December and I'm not complaining.

I will be honest, for the month or so following surgery, I dealt with some pretty tough emotional ups and downs - actually mostly downs. A co-worker of mine passed away that same week from a heart attack. He was a year younger than me. I took that pretty hard and I believe it may be a contributing factor to the emotional rollercoaster that ensued. I started fearing that I would die and fearing death, etc. It was tough. Thankfully, I got through. Now I'm doing so much better. I'm thankful for each day and hope that this surgery will allow me a chance at a longer life.

One of the pitfalls of surgery that I'm dealing with is hairloss. My hair was thinning to begin with, but it seems to have gotten a little worse. I'm told this is common and that it's important that I keep getting my protein in. I'm doing my best.

Oh and my knee pain (the trigger for my surgery decision) has subsided. I hope it doesn't return either. I'm sure the weight loss is a big relief on the knees.

I could probably go on and on, but I'll stop here for now. I'm not sure if anyone sees this or not anymore.

If so - thanks for looking out for me.

Have a wonderful day!
